Chesapeake Bay Retriever

In the unfortunate incident in the 1807, an English ship wrecked off the coast in Maryland. Fortunately all the passengers were saved. At the time two dogs were gifted to the people, who were fond of dogs. Along with other local dogs, these dogs were bred carefully. After intense breeding an amazing breed of dogs develops which were later named as Chesapeake Bay Retriever. These dogs were tuned to harsh and extreme climatic conditions. Hence, were used for hunting purposes. They can spend hours in icy waters hunting for fishes. They could easily hunt hundreds of fishes per day, water would settle like dew drops on their slippery back. One shake and all the drops are gone. This nature of skin was of great benefit to the people breeding them.

Dog Appearance

The height of Chesapeake Bay Retriever was about 22 to 25 inches which is close to 58 to 60 cm in males and 21 to 24 inches in female. The animal weighs around 29 to 30 kg in males and 25 to 32 kg in females. Looking at the origin one can easily make out the muscular personality of the dog. The dog is very much masculine, firm and athletic body. These are known to be loyal, intelligent and obedient to their masters. Chesapeake Bay Retriever is often mistaken with labrador due to the familiarity of its body. The body of chessie is made of two protective oils that make them comfortable and adaptable to any type of environment. The above layer of the skin is rough and crude. Inner layer is woolly. Hands and legs of the animal are flexible which enable it to move in any manner they want. Chessie is normally found in three basic colours, brown, black, cream etc.

Dog Behavior

Chesapeake Bay Retriever is lovable, friendly and affectionate. They are initially reserved; do not mingle easily with strangers. This breed of dog is ardent lover of water, which loves swimming and other water sports. They develop a friendly bond with every member of the family including cats. Generally dogs are found to be enemies of cats, but these dogs share a mutual bond with cats as well. On the contrary they chase other cats. While handling these breed of dogs, the owner should be confident, positive, consistent etc. Chesapeake Bay Retriever generally loves playing. Hence if the owner shows interest in playing, it gets overjoyed.

Chessie requires proper training in order to keep its behaviour under control. They need to be realised who is superior otherwise they may develop leadership qualities and later tend to control others. They can even get aggressive if their demands are not fulfilled.

Chessie has the characteristics of developing boredom if they are not into regular exercise. Hence, the owner should keep an exercise daily in their routine.  Exercises such as swimming, going for a walk, playing with the animal can do for the dog to keep it active. Body of the animal should be brushed daily in order to avoid smell.
